livingwellchronic

Living Well with Chronic Conditions:
Health and Wellness Program
Mondays, June 6th - July 18th (except July 4th)
1:30pm - 4:00pm in the Dining Hall
Chronic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, asthma, pain, COPD, dementia, and Alzheimer's are among the most common and discouraging health problems.  The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) provides information and teaches practical skills on managing chronic health issues while also giving you the confidence and motivation needed to manage the challenges of living with a chronic health condition.

This program is facilitated by non-health professionals with chronic diseases themselves.  Participants receive a copy of Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions and an audio relaxation CD Relaxation for Mind and Body.

It is the process in which the program is taught that makes it effective.  Classes are highly participative where mutual support and success build the participants' confidence to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

Social Worker

Social Worker - Free

Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays - 9:00am-4:30pm

Our social worker is here to troubleshoot any issues or situations that come up which make you feel like you need help.  She can connect you with resources and services, and provide support and encouragement to assist you in achieving your goals, thus helping you to remain self-sufficient.  She can help sort through insurance complexity, daily bills, housing issues, and more. To sign up call 206-297-0403 or stop by the 2nd Floor Reception.

"I would like to take a moment to introduce myself to you.  My name is Melissa, as you may have heard, I was hired as the new Social Worker for Ballard Senior Center.  I immensely enjoy working with seniors and have done so for over 14 years.  I have lived in Seattle for 25 years and have an 11-year-old daughter who someday will entertain you by tap dancing to “Chattanooga Choo Choo”.  I’m delighted to be working at Ballard Senior Center and look forward to meeting everyone in person. I will work tirelessly to connect you to community resources, coordinate care, and (if need be) find new support systems.  I can help you with transitions, finding housing, applying for benefits and assist you in finding new sources of enjoyment.  You can use me simply to bounce ideas off of or more importantly to lean on in times of emotional distress. Please feel free to set up an appointment with the front desk, should you need to reach me. Also, the support groups have all resumed and I hope to see some of you there!  I welcome your ideas and suggestions. Warmest Regards."

Acupuncturist:  Phonexay Lala Simon, LAc, EAMP
Tuesday - 9:00am-12:00pm
Make an appointment to start acupuncture and feeling better today. Appointments are one hour each. Acupuncture can promote blood circulation, decrease inflammation, calm down the central nervous system, enable detoxification, increase your pain thresholds, decrease pain, stimulate the body's natural pain killers, and promote lymphatic and water metabolism.

She underwent rigorous clinical and didactic training at Bastyr Universitiy's teaching clinic as well as several off-site Seattle locations and international clinics.

"From one who doesn't like needles and didn't really believe, I, Carlye, have benefited from this service.  Phonexay is great, caring, and makes this a relaxing and beneficial experience.  If you have an issue, talk to her; see if this is something that can be treated, and then give it a try.  She is here Tuesdays from 9:00am to noon.  Call for an appointment and see if this works for you.  It did for me."

Acupuncture is the insertion of microfine needles into the body to stimulate healing processes. Generally a painless and pleasurable experience.

Bastyr

Bastyr Clinic - FREE

Tuesdays, 1:30pm-4:30pm

Fridays, 9:00am-12:00pm
Need a doc? Come to one of our two free clinics! Stop in for Bastyr Clinic at Ballard NW Senior Center today! Naturopathic medicine emphasizes preventing disease, encouraging the body’s inherent healing ability, treating the whole person and educating patients to be partners in their own health care. While firmly science-based, modern naturopathic medicine also preserves the century-old wisdom of successful natural therapies.

Through Bastyr Center’s Team Care approach, you will see one licensed naturopathic practitioner and one to three advanced student clinicians. Your naturopathic team takes the time to listen to and get to know you as a whole person, working with you to discover your own unique route to wellness.

Our two free Bastyr clinics are very popular so make sure to sign up in advance. These services are free to all, but do require an appointment. Only two appointments per month are allowed for the Bastyr Clinics. Call us at 206-297-0403 or stop by the 2nd Floor Reception to make an appointment.
